Mohali’s Lankan skipper says Yuvraj must justify the hype around him.

Kumar Sangakkara has put Yuvraj Singh in his place after a series of poor scores by the Mohali batsman in the Indian Premier League so far. The Lankan skipper, known for his clear-cut views, has told a TV channel: “Yuvraj’s show has been disappointing so far.”

Sangakkara replaced Yuvraj as Mohali skipper after coach Tom Moody wanted a better all-round leader. Yuvraj’s brash ways have not always won him brownie points and this time, Sangakkara wants the talented left-hander to do more than he has so far in the IPL.

Mohali host Kolkata at the PCA Stadium Saturday night in what will be a needle battle for survival. Last in the eight-team championship with one win from five matches, Sangakkara wants Yuvraj to prove his mettle on this big night. Yuvraj has scored 75 runs from 5 matches and has got out to poor strokes.

Sangakkara says: “Everyone expects a lot from Yuvi and I am sure he is trying very hard to deliver. Responsibility is a key word with him. As professionals at this level, we take a lot of pride in our performances and hopefully the last few games will spur him to better things for us, going forward.”

The suave Lankan added: “Cricket is a game where at the end of the day you have to do justice to your ability and talent. Players will have to justify the hype that comes along with their performances.”

The message is clear for the erratic Indian south paw, who on Friday made the cut for the ICC T20 World Cup in the West Indies next month in spite of his poor show so far.
